Jihad: America Strikes Back

At midnight on January 1, 2000, I toasted the old century by recalling the Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times." The 20th Century was interesting, all right--the bloody old bitch! Then I saluted the babies among us, including my still-unborn granddaughter, with the naive hope: "May you live in more peaceful times than ours."

Of course it wasn't to be. In a single day, in what is really the first year of the 21st Century, more Americans died than we lost in combat during the six years of the Revolutionary War. Thus this new folder. I hope it will be only temporary, but I fear that it will be here for months and probably years.

By the way ... have you noticed that the three bloodiest events in American history all took place in September? They were the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862 (3,610 killed on both sides); the Galveston Flood on September 8, 1900 ("more than 5,000 lost their lives"); and the Jihad attacks of September 11, 2001 (about 4,800 killed by the most recent estimate).
