Tachyon Makes Missile Defense A Broadband Experience
The joint project will serve as a vehicle for early introduction of commercially available technology to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). Achieving compliancy with DOD and other federal agencies' communications requirements, including network security and geographical reach, is therefore intrinsic to the project.
San Diego - Jan 28, 2002

which is a major tactical exercise that assesses how the United States Armed Forces can deploy for a rapid,
decisive operation this decade. Run by the U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM), MC02
will take place in July and August 2002 in the military's Western U.S. training ranges.

Tachyon Inc. of San Diego is another satellite company that is stepping up its efforts to attract customers based in or near Washington.

After discovering that the military was interested in using the company’s satellite data transmission systems, which include software to maximize the efficiency of satellite data links, Tachyon began working with large defense contractors to generate government-related business, said Mark Gercenstein, the company’s chief executive officer. Tachyon’s partners include General Dynamics Corp. of Falls Church, Va., and Northrop Grumman Corp. of Los Angeles, he said.

These partnerships, Gercenstein said, have enabled Tachyon to benefit from the Defense Department’s strong demand for satellite communications services despite the fact that the company is not pre-approved as a vendor to government agencies. Gercenstein said the company wins business by nurturing relationships with the large companies the military frequently turns to for communications services.

Even though Tachyon is based in San Diego, the company is seeing an increasing share of business come from customers on the East Coast of the United States, including federal agencies. Gercenstein said more than 90 percent of the company’s revenue stems from these customers.

Tachyon officials declined to specify the privately held company’s annual revenue, but Gercenstein said it is somewhere above $10 million.

Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) for a terrorist first response readiness exercise: “Tachyon’s connection was excellent. We were able to have people all over the country view the simulated disaster scene over the Web. The command Post was able to watch the exercise unfold live, as well as the response effort. We transmitted large files via FTP, and we published streaming video onto a Web site. We believe that Tachyon’s services will fill several of our needs.”
U.S. Department of the Navy, NCIS.

“Tachyon is well suited to meet the government’s need for secure, reliable, high-speed data Internet and data networking from virtually any location—for homeland security, civilian and military applications including surveillance, reconnaissance, first response, and disaster recovery.”
