Sir Patrick Gillam, Chairman of Standard Chartered, was appointed Chairman of Royal & Sun Alliance in 1997 following the merger of the Royal with Sun Alliance in 1996. Sir Patrick will be retiring from both positions in 2003 upon reaching the age of 70.
