FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - Four vials recovered from a water polluting dump at Fort Detrick do not contain any harmful organisms, Army officials said Wednesday.
Scientists at Detricks U.S. Army Medical Institute of Infectious Diseases analyzed the suspected biological material found Jan. 7 by workers excavating the dump.
One of the vials contained common soil bacteria. Another contained a harmless bacteria called streptoverticillium retriculum. Scientists are confident the other two vials do not contain any harmful organisms, although their contents havent been fully analyzed.
"Theres no hazard to human health," Fort Detrick spokesman Charles Dasey said.
Anthrax, which Fort Detrick produced in large quantities under an offensive biological weapons program from 1951 to 1969, was ruled out shortly after the discovery.
The excavation was halted after the vials were discovered. It will resume later.
