Although the name "bin Laden" is tied to terrorist mastermind
Osama, members of his family (he has more than 50 siblings) prefer to
be known for the business operations of the Saudi Binladin Group. The
family reportedly disowned Osama bin Laden in 1994. The conglomerate
was founded in 1931 by Osama's father, Yemeni immigrant Mohammed bin
Laden (or Binladin). By developing close ties to the Saudi royal
family, the group expanded to include construction, engineering,
manufacturing, and telecommunications. Construction projects include
airports, housing complexes, tunnels, and bridges. The group's
industrial and power projects unit operates as Arabian BEMCO
Contracting Co.

The SBG was founded in 1950 by the family patriarch, Sheikh Mohammed
bin Laden,
who had the good luck of befriending the country's founder,
Abdel
Aziz al Saud,
a relationship led to important government contracts such as
refurbishing the shrines at Mecca
and
Medina.
After the death of Sheikh Mohammed in 1968,
the group was headed by Mohammed
Bahareth, brother of Mohammed's first wife and uncle of
his oldest children. In 1972, Sheikh
Salem
bin Laden, the eldest son, took over as his father's
successor, with the
assistance of several brothers. Upon Salem's death in a plane crash in
1988, the leadership of the group passed to his eldest
son, Bakr,
the current chairman, along with thirteen other brothers who make up
the board
of the bin Laden group, the most important of these being Hassan, Yeslam
and Yehia. By 2002,
the company had 35,000 employees worldwide,
and was worth $5 billion.[1]
Current activities
The bin Laden group is represented in most Saudi cities
– Riyadh, Damman – and in a number
of capital cities in the region (Beirut,
Cairo, Amman, Dubai).
According to a
recent synopsis by PBS Frontline:[2]
- in Egypt the SBG is headed by Abdul
Aziz bin Laden,
and represents that country's largest
foreign-owned private equity group, with over 40,000 employees.
Currently negotiating a $400 million contract for construction of
a paper plant, together with the Shobokshi
Group of Saudi Arabia.
- in Lebanon the SBG, represented by Yehia bin Laden, had been
(before the July
War) holding negotations with the local authorities for a $50
million share in the project to
rebuild the Beirut Central District
within the framework of the Solidere
Project and in conjunction with the al
Baraka Group and the
bin
Mahfouz Group.
Internationally the Group's operations are handled by the Geneva, Switzerland-based
Saudi
Investment Company (SICO), headed
by Yeslam
bin Ladin. The group also set up a representative firm in
London, Binexport,
in November 1990.
On December
20, 2005,
the government of Saudi
Arabia awarded a consortium of Saudi and Emirati
companies, including the Saudi Binladin Group, a $26.6 billion contract
to build King
Abdullah Economic City.[3]
Website
Although it had distanced itself from their relative and
former company employee Usama, the Saudi Binladin Group's corporate
website, [4][5]
expired on September
11, 2001, the same day as
the attacks in the United States.[6]
A new website within
the .sa top-level domain appeared later.

Cyberia, a regional player, will be operating in three countries,
including Lebanon, Jordan and Saudi Arabia; it is one of the largest
privately held Internet Service Providers in the Arab world and is one
of the leading ISPs in Lebanon and Jordan.
The merger is the result of an aggressive growth strategy followed by
all three companies. It is a continuation of a merger between Dallah
Telecom and TRInet that took place several months ago.

Now, it gets interesting.
This was no accident, according to a VeriSign technician in
Mountainview, Calif.
"This was timed so it would expire on that date," says the technician,
who identified herself only by
her first name, Antonette, and by her employee number, 001. Antonette
also verified that the information
listed in the whois search was accurate and not tampered with by an
outside party. Antonette added that
VeriSign had already been contacted by law enforcement about other
attack-related domain names the
company had registered.
"I had a call from the L.A. police," she said. "He was also asking
about a domain name that expired on
Sept. 11. I can’t remember the name of it, but it had
something to do with the WTC."
he Binladin website was created by a company called Arq Limited, a U.K.
web design firm. The
administrative, technical and billing contact listed on the whois
search is a man named Philip Lumsden.
After several calls to the U.K., I learned that Arq Limited went out of
business, replaced by a company
called *Active 8 Solutions*, which shares the same Bath, England,
mailing address and a telephone number
that is only one digit off from Arq Limited’s old number.
I learned one more interesting thing.
"*Mr. Lumsden* left a week ago," said a man who answered the phone at
Active 8 Solutions. "I am not aware
of why he left."
The man, who would not give his name, added that he had "no clue" about
the saudi-binladin-group.com site.

Charles Boncelet, a University of Delaware computer and information
sciences professor, is an expert on steganography.
Does Boncelet think that happened with saudi-binladin-group.com, which
was created by a U.K. web-design firm called Arq Limited?
At first blush, he said no.
"My guess is
that it is a coincidence," said Boncelet. Then, later in
our conversation, he acknowledged that not only would that have been
"a hell of a coincidence," but "it may be more.
The date suggests that they would know a year in advance what they
would do, if that is how they were trying to communicate."
There are a lot of strange coincidences when it comes to
saudi-binladin-group.com.
Which brings us to the mysterious case of Paul
Gabelia.
According to a police report, on Sun., September 1, 1996, Fairfax
County, Va., police discovered human remains in the trunk of a 1991
silver Mercury Sable sedan that had been on fire.
The body’s feet and knees were bound with wire, and jumper
cables were wrapped around its neck. Its hands appeared to be free.
A search of motor-vehicle records showed that the car belonged to an
Alexandria, Va., attorney named Paul Gabelia and his wife, Nam Dong
Kim. At 2 a.m., Sept. 2, Detective R.J. Murphy arrived at the
couple’s home, knocked on the door and was greeted by an
Asian female wearing blue shorts and a white T-shirt who appeared to
have just woken up.
The woman walked past the front door, into the kitchen, shut off the
garage light and opened the front door.
"You’re here about my husband," said the woman,
Gabelia’s wife Nam Dong Kim. She opened the door and let the
officers in. Kim told the police that her husband had left home about
2:30 p.m. on Sept. 1 to attend a business meeting "with some Syrian
businessmen," according to the police report. Kim "did not know where
this meeting would take place, but stated that Gabelia would frequently
meet international businessmen at hotels near National or Dulles
airports … [she] stated that Gabelia told her about the
Syrians recently and had expressed his suspicion that the source of
their money was not legitimate and that he planned to confront them
about that."
Kim consented to a search of her house, but she wouldn’t let
police examine Gabelia’s computer or a number of life
insurance policies.
Kim also told police that she and her husband were
experiencing "marital difficulties, but, nothing serious and they would
argue occasionally." She added that she and her two children had gone
to bed about 11:30 p.m. and that she was worried.
Kim "was cooperative and appeared truthful," Murphy noted in his
report. The next day, medical examiner Frances Field found the cause of
death to be strangulation.

Live vital signs, video and voice have brought
telemedicine to
reality. LiveWorks and TeleMedic
Systems have formed a strategic
alliance to offer the first ever rugged and durable telemedicine
product, combining real time vital signs with two way audio and
video. This is unique as the vital signs and the two-way video/audio
call
are both simultaneous. Unlike existing
|
systems, there is no 'store and forward' element with
the LiveLink / VitalLink solution.
This innovative system makes real time monitoring
more powerful in providing non-medically trained
personnel with the ability to provide assistance to casualties
in remote medical emergency situations.
The systems are in use today with frontline workers
such as television journalists and oilfield workers |
Recently LiveWorks teamed up
with UK and Saudi based
technology company Cybersol
to
bring LiveWorks solutions to the
Middle East market. Since then
LiveLink has been appearing at
shows across the region. Over
the past few months the LiveLink
has made appearances at
exhibitions such as Milipol Qatar,
and earlier this month Gemex
Dubai. Later this month we can
be seen at IDEX 2003 in Abu
Dhabi. Further events will be
announced throughout the year.
Due to world events LiveLink has
is heavily deployed across the |
Middle East with news crews and
also military forces. On
a more
positive note
Cybersol’s efforts
have resulted in
the LiveLink
being purchased for
oil company
emergency vehicles.
Now management can communicate
visually with field workers
directing operations based on the
best possible visual information.
