Mohamed Atta

Mohamed Atta is certainly the alleged hijacker can be best proven that he had a double.

The list is long when he was at two different places basically at the same time:

September 7, 2001 alone is a very convincing example. The same goes for September 8, 2001 -when either Atta is in two different places at the same time or somebody exactly acting like Atta is in a place where Atta had been seen before already).

Furthermore the Atta witnessed in the Phillipines (1998-2000) is in strong contradiction to the official Atta being in Germany at that time.

The same goes for Atta being reported as having asked for a job at Frankfurt airport in February 2001 while officially being in the US.

One witness sees Atta in Logan Airport on the morning of September 9 though he was officially in Balitimore.

Atta was witnessed in Hamburg in April 2001 although he officially didn�t leave the country at that time.

Atta is supposed to have vacated his Hamburg flat on March 11, 2001 although officially he�s in the US at that time.

Atta is also witnessed in Hamburg in April 2001 although he officially is still in the US at that time.

There are reports of Atta studying in Spain in 1997 and 1998 although he is seen studying in Hamburg at the same time.

A credit card receipt seems to place Atta in New York on September 10 though he was officially in Boston and later the day in Portland.

Even the official program "Able Danger" that is much in the news is strong evidence for this alleged hijacker having a double: How come Atta was identified by Able Danger as being part of the Brooklyn group in January 2000 though Atta officially only arrived in June 2000?

And how come Able Danger also uncovered Atta and Al Shehhi living in Wayne (close to Paterson) while officially they have been at that time in Florida?

Atta�s repeatedly witnessed presence in Toronto does hardly fit with the official timeline neither. See "The month leading to September 11".

On the one hand are his signatures of the different car rentals on the other hand his Florida driver�s licence and his application at the Florida department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles

His English is sometimes described as almost without accent sometimes as bad and heavily accented. In Germany he speaks almost without accent although he only learnt German just before entering the country but Rudi Dekkers in Venice remarked that Atta didn�t seem to understand German.

And in Germany he is described as being almost 5� 4��. In the US we have estimations of 5� 8�� and even 5� 10�� (his visa application states also 5-feet-8).

Why do the LaConcas not recognize him on any photo presented to them by the FBI (See "Height" in background information)?

Some evidence underline that somebody with the same name as Atta was in the US before his official date of entry:

Atta received a visa in May 2000 although he was under the observation of the CIA.

� Ralph Bodenstein joins Mohamed Atta and Volker Hauth in a project sponsored by the German government, writing a report on the renovation work being undertaken by the Egyptian government on the old city gates. The subsequent report is deemed excellent. The same year, Atta goes on a student trip to Istanbul.

Atta and Volker Hauth go to Aleppo, Syria on a field trip for several weeks to research what would become his thesis, the conflict between Islam and modernity as reflected in the planning of historical cities.

Atta takes six months off from Plankontor to make a pilgrimage to Mecca, sending them a postcard from the holy city."

"Mohamed Atta returns to Syria and makes contact with members in the committee of the project to revive old Aleppo."

[i]Comment: It�s hard to see how the Atta studying in Germany and reportedly never travelling to Prague at that time can have established two firms. If this is simply a different innocent person it is worth noticing that he as well comes from Cairo and Atta used his name as an alias.

"Atta grows a distinctive beard shortly before he takes a three-month trip to Egypt with Volker Hauth and Ralph Bodenstein in order to conduct research for their project."

Atta apparently wrote his last will. The Arabic original was never made public. The text was translated by the FBI.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo later reports, "According to several professors at the Valencia School of Medicine, some of whom are forensic experts, (Mohamed Atta) was a student there in 1997 or 1998. Although he used another name then, they remember his face among the students that attended anatomy classes." It is also suggested that "years before, as a student he went to Tarragona.

"Atta was laid off by Plankontor. The partners had bought a CAD system and his draughtsmanship was not needed. 'When he was given his last sum of money, he got too much from us and he sent it back,' recalled Frinken. 'He said that he hadn't earned it and he didn't want any more'."

"Machule said Atta then took a long break from his studies. The recollections of others show it could only have been in the period from the end of the academic year in 1997 to the start of the academic year in 1998 - a gap of 15 months which the Egyptian explained to his professor as being for family reasons."

"Atta leaves Plankontor and drops out of university for 15 months. From mid-1997 to October 1998, Atta seems to disappear from Hamburg, telling his thesis advisor that he was gone for family reasons. Investigators speculate that this is when Atta went to Afghanistan for training with Al Qaeda."

Atta and Marwan Alshehhi live periodically in the town of Mabalacat, Philippines. They stay in the Woodland Resort hotel and apparently learn to fly planes at a nearby flight school. Philippine and US investigators have looked into these visits but haven't confirmed the hijackers' presence there. Locals, however, are certain they saw them frequently partying, drinking alcohol, sleeping with local women, and consorting with many other, unknown Arabs (most of whom disappear shortly before 9/11).

A German inquiry into Mounir El Motassadeq, an alleged member of the Hamburg al-Qaeda cell with Mohamed Atta, begins by this time. Although Germany will not reveal details, documents show that by August 1998, Motassadeq is under surveillance. "The trail soon (leads) to most of the main (Hamburg) participants" in 9/11. Surveillance records Motassadeq and Mohammed Haydar Zammar, who had already been identified by police as a suspected extremist, as they meet at the Hamburg home of Said Bahaji, who is also under surveillance that same year. (Bahaji will soon move into an apartment with Atta and other al-Qaeda members.) German police monitor several other meetings between Motassadeq and Zammar in the following months.

The CIA also starts monitoring Atta while he is living at this apartment, and does not tell Germany of the surveillance. Remarkably, the German government will claim it knew little about the Hamburg al-Qaeda cell before 9/11, and nothing directed them towards the Marienstrasse apartment.

�Normen Pentolino, operations manager at the Hollywood store, said two cashiers told FBI agents they might have recognized Atta, but weren't certain. Sources inside the store said Atta may have held a BJ's membership card for more than two years. "

Ziad Jarrah has an unofficial wedding with his girlfriend, Aisel Senguen. Atta is there as well. A photo apparently taken by Jarrah at the wedding is found by German intelligence several days after 9/11. An undercover agent is able immediately to identify ten of the 18 men in the photo, as well as where it was taken: the prayer room of Hamburg's Al-Quds mosque. He is also able to identify which of them attended Mohamed Atta's study group. He knows even "seemingly trivial details" of some of the men, showing that "probably almost all members of the Hamburg terror cell" has been watched by German state intelligence since this time, if not before. The head of the state intelligence had previously maintained that they knew nothing of any of these men.

Atta arrives in Newark, N.J., from Prague, on a temporary visitor's visa, issued in Berlin.

Several employees recall Atta staying at the hotel in Mabalacat, Philippines during the summer of 1999, acting unfriendly and cheap. One hotel employee claims that most of the guests were Arab, and many took flying lessons at the nearby school. These witnesses claim the two used aliases, but the other Arabs referred to Atta as "Mohamed."

Apparently, multiple e-mails are sent from the same Hotmail account. Some e-mails are signed "M. Atta," while others are signed "Mahmoud Ben Hamad."

Mohamed Atta and another of the 9/11 hijackers (presumably Marwan Alshehhi) rent rooms in New York City, according to a federal investigator. These rooms are in the Bronx and Brooklyn. Following 9/11, Atta is traced back to Brooklyn by a parking ticket issued to a rental car he was driving. The Associated Press article on this subject does not specify if Atta first stayed in New York before or after the official entrance date of June 3, 2000.

"Mohammed Atta, an Egyptian, applied for and on the next day received a five-year B-1/B-2 (tourist/business) visa from the U.S. embassy in Berlin, Germany. The consular officer who adjudicated this visa said Atta "definitely" was not interviewed. According to the officer, because he was a third-country national who had long been resident in Germany (approximately five years), the visa interview requirement was waived, and Atta was "basically treated like" a German citizen. German citizens do not need visas, as they participate in a "visa waiver" program. Another factor in his favor was Atta�s strong record as a student in Germany. Atta�s visa application was destroyed prior to 9/11 pursuant to State Department policy then in effect, so we were able to review only the electronic record of his application."

Mohamed Atta reportedly has a very strange meeting with Johnelle Bryant of the US Department of Agriculture. According to Bryant, in the meeting Atta does all of the following:

He mentions that he wants to "build a chemical tank that would fit inside the aircraft and take up every available square inch of the aircraft except for where the pilot would be sitting."

He uses his real name even as she takes notes, and makes sure she spells it correctly.

He asks to buy the aerial photograph of Washington hanging on her Florida office wall, throwing increasingly large "wads of cash" at her when she refuses to sell it.

Anonymous government sources later claim that Mohamed Atta visits fellow hijackers Nawaf Alhazmi, Khalid Almihdhar, and Omar al-Bayoumi. These same sources claim al-Bayoumi is identified after September 11 as an "advance man" for al-Qaeda.

Other reports have suggested Atta visited Alhazmi and Almihdhar in San Diego, but the FBI has not confirmed this.

However, Shaikh denies Atta's visits, the FBI never mentions them, and the media appears to have forgotten about them.

Now, she believes the men had been celebrating the Oct. 12 suicide bombing of the USS Cole in the Middle East."

Atta received a score of 90 in 122 minutes and Shehhi received a score of 75 in 89 minutes.62 After passing this test, Atta and Shehhi were able to sign out planes. According to later German reports, "a whole horde of Israeli counter-terror investigators, posing as students, [follow] the trails of Arab terrorists and their cells in the United States. ... In the town of Hollywood, Florida, they (identify) ... Atta and Marwan Alshehhi as possible terrorists. Agents (live) in the vicinity of the apartment of the two seemingly normal flight school students, observing them around the clock." Supposedly, around April, the Israeli agents are discovered and deported, terminating the investigation.

"Atta and Marwan al-Shehhi landed a single-engine plane at least twice at the Clearwater Airpark one night in January or February 2001, according to Daniel Pursell, chief instructor for a Venice flight school that rented planes to the pair.

The two men, likely sharing controls, practiced in nighttime conditions for 30 minutes or more, eventually drawing the attention of a Clearwater police aide who worked as a night watchman and copied the plane's information, Pursell told the St. Petersburg Times .

Atta "was almost denied entry to the United States earlier this year when an immigration inspector at Miami International Airport became suspicious that he wanted to take flight lessons while on a tourist visa.

The inspector ordered Atta out of the regular immigration line so a second immigration officer could question him at length, a federal official familiar with the incident said. After a 57-minute delay, the second inspector cleared Atta into the country as a tourist, the official said."

"The primary immigration inspector who screened him told the Commission that he had been working as a primary inspector for less than a year when Atta presented himself. He said he knew that if he took more time than 45 seconds to determine a visitor�s admissibility or if he made too many referrals to secondary inspection, he could receive a poor performance appraisal. During an interview with the Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General (DOJ OIG), in November 2001, the primary inspector recalled some of his encounter with Atta. He told the interviewer that Atta presented an Egyptian passport with a tourist/business visa and an INS student/school form indicating that he was attending school. The inspector determined that Atta needed either an F-1 visa to attend an academic school or an M-1 visa to attend a vocational school, and had neither. The official�s "inspection results report" recorded Atta�s statement that he had "turned in" a student/school form to the INS in an attempt to change his status, but that he "has not had a response [from the INS], meanwhile he�s attending flight training school, already in school for 5/6 months."The inspector, however, had already begun to process Atta for admission into the United States before noticing the visa problem. The I-94 arrival record, which was stamped and stapled into Atta�s passport, indicated that the primary inspector initially approved a one-month stay as a B-1 business visitor. The second red ink admission stamp (located on the top of Atta�s passport in the figure) was that of a B-1 visitor, but the length of stay was left blank. We know this was the work of the primary inspector, as the stamp bears his assigned number. The inspector told us that the blank length of stay on the admission stamp indicated that while he was almost finished processing Atta, he stopped, realizing that Atta needed more scrutiny. He sent him to a secondary immigration inspection for closer examination. The immigration inspectors the Commission interviewed understood that INS policy permitted a commercial pilot coming to the United States for ongoing training to be admitted as a business visitor for the time necessary to complete his training. However, an alien wishing to pursue such training needed a vocational student visa. The primary inspector initially thought that Atta was already a pilot who was seeking continuing education, and then decided that Atta was studying to become a pilot and had the wrong visa.The ten-year veteran immigration inspector who conducted Atta�s secondary examination admitted him as a tourist for eight months, though Atta had said he was still attending school and though as a tourist his stay should be legally limited to six months. This inspector initially recalled some aspects of this inspection in late 2001, when he was interviewed by the DOJ OIG; he said then that Atta was referred to secondary inspection as a possible overstay on a B1/B2 tourist visa. However, he told the Commission he no longer had any memory of this inspection and could not recall whether he asked Atta for his I-20 student/school form, checked the school/student system to verify Atta�s information, or asked Atta whether he was a part-time or full-time student, was attending flight school, or was still in school. The same inspector told the DOJ OIG that he had checked INS computer databases for information on Atta and learned that the Egyptian had filed for a change of immigration status from tourist to student. He told the Commission that because the student tracking system at that time was "garbage"-full of information that was no longer valid and lacking updates-he would not have checked it to verify Atta�s story that he was still in school. Yet the inspector told the DOJ OIG that he knew Atta had filed a change of immigration status from a computer check of his records. The inspector seems to have concluded that this application was still pending and that Atta was admissible. But under INS policy, Atta abandoned his application when he left the country. Other inspectors we interviewed were aware of this policy. Thus, Atta�s entry into the United States with the wrong visa should have been grounds for his removal.The Commission sought to understand whether the secondary inspector�s understanding of Atta�s pending application affected the decision to admit him. In a subsequent 2002 interview with DOJ OIG, the inspector stated that if an alien departed the United States prior to his or her application for change of status being granted, then that application is considered abandoned. If that alien then seeks to reenter the United States as a student, he or she must obtain the correct student visa. Thus, according to the secondary inspector, Atta should not have been admitted. However, in response to a Commission staff question the inspector said that he thought the applicant in such a case "would still be in status; a gray area."In fact, this was not a gray area. Other inspectors we interviewed, including the primary inspector in this case, said that leaving the United States while an application for change of status was still pending made it necessary for the alien to get a new visa overseas. Indeed, the DOJ OIG concluded that the issue of the pending application was a red herring: all that mattered was whether Atta had the correct visa to enter the United States at the time he applied for entry. The secondary inspector admitted Atta as a B-2 tourist, which automatically set the length of stay at six months. Only a supervisor could vary this period, allowing a tourist to stay up to one year in the country. Every inspector we interviewed verified this. However, this inspector gave Atta eight months, until September 8, 2001, without supervisory approval. Thus, both Atta�s admission as a tourist and his length of stay were improper. In addition, Atta had overstayed his previous visa by one month when he departed the United States on January 4, 2001.89 That overstay should have been obvious to a secondary inspector tasked with giving a thorough look at Atta, for his passport would have contained an entry stamp into a foreign country from the week before, and an original U.S. admission stamp dated seven months earlier. Though the overstay did not make Atta automatically inadmissible, it could have been considered. But there is no indication that the secondary inspector who adjudicated Atta�s admission took his overstay into account. In contrast, other inspectors have told us that overstays are a typical travel pattern of an intending immigrant, and are normally a red flag for those attempting reentry. The secondary inspector also could have admitted Atta into the United States for 30 days for a fee of $170, requiring Atta to present paperwork from his school to prove his current student status within 30 days. However, the inspector told us he had not considered the option of a deferred inspection. Such an inspection would have placed Atta in a difficult position: because he was already finished with school, he would have been unable to present paperwork indicating that he was still legally a student."

A number of the hijackers make at least six trips to Las Vegas. It is probable they met here after doing practice runs on cross-country flights. At least Mohamed Atta, Marwan Alshehhi, Nawaf Alhazmi, Ziad Jarrah, Khalid Almihdhar and Hani Hanjour were involved. All of these "fundamentalist" Muslims drink alcohol, gamble, and frequent strip clubs. They even have strippers perform lap dances for them.

INS district offices adjudicate all types of immigration benefits inspections, including naturalization interviews, applications for permanent residency based on marriage to a U.S. citizen, and deferred inspections for students lacking the proper paperwork upon entry. But Atta had something else in mind. He wanted his companion, who was likely Jarrah, to obtain the same eight-month length of stay that he had (wrongfully) received in January. By late morning, Atta finally made it to the inspection desk. An inspector from Miami International Airport was getting ready to take a break for lunch at about 11:30 A.M.when three men approached her at the counter. This inspector had worked primary and secondary inspections at airports, as well as of ship crews, since 1988 in Fort Lauderdale and Miami. In large capital letters, he wrote, "ATTA." Atta told the inspector that he wanted his friend to receive an eight-month length of stay as he had. The inspector recalled taking both passports to see if they had genuine visas. She also looked at the I-94 arrival records in the passports. Atta�s companion had received a six-month stay as a tourist, with an end date of September 8, 2001. She also noticed that Atta had been admitted as a tourist for eight months. During this time, Atta was quiet. She told Atta, "Someone gave you the wrong admission and I�m not giving your friend eight months." The inspector then went to her supervisor, informed him that Atta had been granted an incorrect length of stay, and asked permission to roll it back to six months. The supervisor agreed. The inspector then tore the I-94 record out of Atta�s passport, and created a new I-94 for six months, which allowed Atta to remain in the United States until July 9, 2001. On the record she wrote: "I-94 issued in error at MIA [Miami International Airport]. New I-94 issued." The inspector then took a red-inked admission stamp, rolled the date back to January 10, and stamped Atta as a B-2 tourist. She wrote in a length of stay until July 9, 2001, and handed Atta back his passport and new I-94 record. Atta took the documents, said thank you, and left with his companions."

This travel consisted of an initial transcontinental trip from an east-coast city to a west-coast city, and a connection in that westcoast city to a Las Vegas-bound flight."

Atta flies to Las Vegas and rents "a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu with Nevada license plate 743 MPR. That car is registered to Alamo Rent A Car at McCarran International Airport."

"Atta stayed in Las Vegas from June 29 to July 1, according to a registration slip at the Econo Lodge, an inexpensive motel on the Las Vegas Strip in a neighborhood of street prostitutes, tattoo parlors, adult book stores and wedding chapels. The Econo Lodge registration, also obtained by The Times, shows that he stayed in Room 122 and took advantage of an American Automobile Assn. discount of 10%. Atta paid $49.50 a night for the room."

Admat returned to the airport and dropped out of sight, while Atta drove in a rented car to Tarragona."

"My hands," Atta grumbled rudely one day. "They're itching and they're burning."

Gregg Chatterton recites the words, using a slight Middle Eastern accent to imitate the serious, square-jawed Egyptian. The co-owner of an independent pharmacy along Atlantic Avenue in downtown Delray Beach, Chatterton approached Atta and al-Shehhi one afternoon in early August 2001 after they spent a suspiciously long time in the skin cream aisle.

He asked what happened to make Atta's hands raw, but the patient was evasive. The pharmacist handed him a 1-ounce tube of Acid Mantle, priced at $5.49, to replenish the natural acid content in his hands. Chatterton began walking away when Atta, who stood 5 feet 8, slapped an intimidating hand against the druggist's chest. It stopped him cold.

The friendlier al-Shehhi planned a violent death in less than a month. He would be told to praise Allah and hold out his chest as the plane hit the World Trade Center's south tower, creating the fireball that would land on every front page in the world. Until then, however, he wanted something that would get him through the night.

The incident ensured that he would remember the pair when the FBI came calling a few weeks later. "When somebody touches you like that," he said of Atta, "you remember that customer."

By his count, Chatterton has told that story to reporters 112 times. It has given rise to the theory that Atta irritated his hands while handling anthrax.

"Atta drove to the Orlando airport to meet Kahtani. Upon arrival, however, Kahtani was denied entry by immigration officials because he had a one-way ticket and little money, could not speak English, and could not adequately explain what he intended to do in the United States."

"A Saudi named Mohammed Al-Qahtani is stopped at the Orlando, Florida, airport and denied entry to the US. Jose Melendez-Perez, the customs official who stops him, later says he was suspicious of Al-Qahtani because he had arrived with no return ticket, no hotel reservations, spoke little English, behaved menacingly, and offered conflicting information on the purpose of his travel. Because a dashboard service light had come on, Atta asked for the Escort back."

"Last August, Atta moved on to Palm Beach Flight Training at another airport in Lantana. He rented a four-seat Piper Archer from Aug. 16 to 19, said Marian Smith, owner of the school.

According to Daniel Hopsicker Shuckum�s manager Tony Amos and bartender Patricia Idrissi don�t work in the bar anymore and have disappeared. Hopsicker was unable to find them.

"Atta left the bar after another Middle Eastern man arrived, Sievers said. When the FBI released Atta�s picture Sept. 27, Sievers called the FBI and told authorities what she saw, she told Longboat Key police.

Local police left the investigation at that, but a waiter at the Holiday Inn said Atta did not go far from the bar.

The waiter, Frank Boyal, said Atta and his companion had the hotel�s $18.95 "Surf and Turf" buffet on Sept. 7. "They were just here. I remember the face."

Boyal said he was struck by the two men�s lack of appetite. The pair only picked at the buffet, Boyal remembered.

Boyal didn�t overhear the two men�s conversation, because it was a busy night and he was "running around like a chicken with its head cut off," he said. Although he knew Sievers had spoken with the authorities about the sighting, Boyal chose not to mention it to anyone, he said."

Dr. Mohamed Atta lving in Baltimore is in New York�s Helmsley Hotel on this day. Although it is later explained that he is not the alleged hijacker it is amazing to notice that he was seen with nobody else but Marwan Alshehhi in the Helmsely Hotel.

"Mohamed Atta calls Khalid Shaikh Mohammed in Afghanistan. Mohammed gives final approval to Atta to launch the attacks. This call is monitored and translated by the US, although it is not known how quickly the call is translated, and the specifics of the conversation haven't been released."

"A tip led agents to a Deerfield Beach motel, where Atta and Alshehhi may have stayed Monday. Federal agents and crime-scene specialists from the Broward Sheriff's Office converged on the Panther Motel, 715 South A1A, Thursday afternoon.
FBI agents walked the transient beach neighborhood, showing photos of four Arab men who, they said, could have been in the area on Monday.

Apparently Atta threw his black and white shirt that can be seen on the FBI photos from Portland into the dumpster of the Comfort Inn:

"The 2001 blue Nissan Altima rental car, bearing Massachusetts license 3335VI, entered Portland International Jetport Airport parking lot. It was parked on the first floor directly across from the airport entrance."

The US Airways ticket agent who does check in the two alleged hijackers is called Michael Tuohey.

Quirion and Guerrette are later on Delta 1989 and made an emergency landing in Cleveland.

[i] Comment: While there is a contradiction in the accounts of Quirion, Isenberg�s description also differs slightly from the Guerette�s and Quirion�s: Here the hijackers are in a hurry. Moreover Isenberg seems to imply to me that the hijackers would have missed the flight if it would have been in time? This corresponds to the "Financial Times" observation.

"Before checking into Flight 11, hijacker Mohammed Atta takes a call from Marwan al Shehhi, who is at Terminal C of Logan airport on his way to check into Flight 175. It is the last conversation these two will ever have."

To him, Saddam Hussein was an American stooge set up to give Washington an excuse to intervene in the Middle East. Within his circle, Atta advocated violent jihad. He reportedly asked one individual close to the group if he was "ready to fight for [his] belief " and dismissed him as too weak for jihad when the person declined. On a visit home to Egypt in 1998, Atta met one of his college friends. According to this friend, Atta had changed a great deal, had grown a beard, and had "obviously adopted fundamentalism" by that time."

"If in Egypt, and later in the US, he was Mohamed Atta, then at the Technical University of Harburg, he was Mohamed el-Amir. For the university authorities, he was an Egyptian, yet for his landlord, as for the US authorities, he was from the United Arab Emirates."

In Hamburg "he grew a beard, swapped his black jeans and conventional western attire for long robes and refused to shake hands or mix with female students."

"Then there was Mohamed Atta, 33, described as intellectual and clear thinking by a professor at a German university where he wrote an A-plus graduation thesis. "

"Described as an extremely serious student at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, he produced a 152-page thesis on the renewal of the old quarter of Aleppa, Syria, that showed him to be a "well-reasoning person," said his academic adviser, Dittmar Machule."

"His thesis was what mattered, and it was brilliant. Atta got a 1.0 - the highest possible mark."

"Dekkers stated that he believed Atta and Alshehhi had previously attended another aviation school, so both had some piloting experience. He said they presented their logbooks when applying at Huffman to show proof of previous flight hours. "

"At least two Brooklyn addresses linked to Atta's name would have been within sight of the World Trade Center, and another is in public housing along the Rockway Parkway, near Kennedy International Airport.

But the 17th-floor apartment number linked to Atta's name on the credit trace does not exist, said Howard Marder, spokesman for the New York City Housing Authority. The Bayview Apartments are only seven stories tall, he said."

"Lynn DeLano, the new owner of the apartment building in Hollywood, knew little about her tenant.

''I don't know how this person could have been here and no one remembers a thing about him,'' she says."

"Charlotte County Sheriff William Clement said local business owners in Punta Gorda, about 100 miles south of Tampa, recognized Atta from his photograph in the newspaper and contacted police. Agents seized last week records from Professional Aviation Flight Training University, a financially troubled flight school in Charlotte County that had recruited students from Tunisia and went out of business in the spring of 2001."

"Chief suspect Atta learned flying at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach in Florida. One of his classmates, Ali Muhammed al-Darmaki, is believed among the dead terrorists."

"On Tuesday night, FBI agents descended on the Tara Gardens condominium in Coral Springs, showing a photo of Atta, 33, and asking whether residents had seen him. According to residents, Atta rented apartment 122 and left a car parked behind the well-kept, three-story, 36-unit building at 10001 W. Atlantic Blvd. FBI agents on Tuesday night cordoned off the car and refused to let anyone near it.

No one answered the door at apartment 122 on Wednesday, and an FBI agent who was interviewing neighbors refused to comment. The vertical blinds on the apartment were left partially open, revealing a spotless and apparently unoccupied apartment with no personal belongings visible.

It's not clear when Atta moved to Coral Springs. He also recently rented an apartment in Hollywood."
